I have seen those i hold dear to me in some of the worst predicaments over the past few months, yet they have been strong. My Grandmother has just lost her sister to cancer and than that news hit a little bit closer to home. She found out that she had cancer. After seeing the aftermath of what had happened to her sister, our family was, well, more than worried to say the least. We found out just before Thanksgiving that it was colon cancer and that she was due to have it removed the first week of December. The whole family from all over the country came to give her support, strength and courage to fight. All set to be wheeled of to surgery, we got wind that it would be canceled due to some slight imbalances in her vitals. Set to have the surgery pushed back one week we were all there for her again, only to have the same thing happen and having it pushed back yet again. Now if you are following, this puts her surgery the right before Christmas. 2011 was the first Christmas our family has ever been apart, and the first I have ever spent holding my Grandmothers hand while she was lying in a hospital bed. My sister handmade a picture box that had various memorabilia in it. One thing in particular was a letter that Grandfather had wrote to my Grandmother on Valentine's day one year. It may not seem like much but he had never learnt howto write in cursive and that was one thing that she had always wanted him to do. So there in that little box in her hands while she lay in a hospital bed on christmas with her family there, I saw her so happy. That little hand written cursive note read, " To my Valentine, love all ways, love always." My sister somehow managed the impossible yet again. She made a recovering cancer patient two days from surgery in a room full of people cry on Christmas and not give a damn. She wasn't crying out of sadness, no she was crying for all of us. I don't know how to explain this to you, the reader, but it was a very emotional time.
Well my grandmother was strong, stronger than you could imagine. She just had her belly sliced open and part of her colon removed and in just a few short days, she was up and walking! She could not wait to get out of that hospital so she could go home and watch the rest of those that which she has loved from their birth simply tear some stupid paper and make a mess and eat some food. Let me tell you what, that was the best dang Christmas I can remember to date. I love the way that old lady smiles. I know I am not the only one either. My Grandmother made it through the New year and is still kicking like she is trying to win a bet with the devil himself. I guess it just goes to show that you can never stop believing, no matter how much life sucks, you just get up laugh and don't take no for an answer.
On another note, my grandfather just had surgery this morning. Unfortunately i was unable to attend his but from what I hear he is doing great and off to a speedy recovery as well. He has been in pain for quite some time and unable to hold his head up due to some degenerating discs in his cervical spine. I am a little fuzzy on all the details other than he is still one stubborn man that finally had something good done to him for a change.
Hopefully 2012 will be a better year.....
